  Content is key(內(nèi)容是核心)

It's content, not size, that matters. More specifically, it's the quality of the content in a resume — the information that immediately tells me why you're the right person for the job — that matters.

If you're wondering what to leave in and what to take out, a simple rule of thumb is to include information that is relevant to your career — membership/leadership roles in industry associations, education, speaking engagements, or published articles — and to take out any personal information — age, marital2 status, number of children, health or political/religious affiliations3. Whether your resume is one or two pages, make every word count.

  Less is still more(簡短很重要)

I think it's always good to remember that a resume is not unlike a business card; it gives the recruiter and hiring manager information about you, but is by no means you. I give points for being succinct4 and for originality5. After reflecting on some of the best resumes I've seen, I would recommend keeping to 700-1000 words. I also recommend keeping it to one page unless you are at the VP-or-above level. And in that case, less is still more. If you are at the exec level, only brief information is needed about your first few jobs.

Electronic communication has changed the old adage6 of "no more than one page." As a recruiter, I don't even notice scrolling7 through a couple of pages. The more important factor to me is that the format1 is easy to read (i.e. clean, simple sentences, flows nicely, etc.), identifies what the candidate has done and where they did it, and relates to the position at hand. In the presentation of your information, make it easy for the audience to see how your background correlates to the position you are applying for.

  Summarize with accuracy(簡短精確!)

I have seen resumes that have literally9 been 10 pages long. Recruiters and hiring managers simply do not have time to read resumes that long, regardless of experience. The best resumes I have seen are 2-3 pages long highlighting skills and accomplishments10. Don't get too wordy — we don't want to read a novel, just a summary. And be accurate! If it is on your resume, recruiters and managers will ask you about it!

  What resume?(簡歷的功用)

More and more companies allow applying without a resume. Sometimes they even prefer this, as it may be a sign that you are a passive job seeker. I have seen in many companies that they do the screening without using a resume; they only require a resume in case of an interview. So the general advice I would give is to make sure that whatever is required in the online application is filled out! And of course do have a resume with all the necessary keywords if you are an active seeker.

In a recent Gallup survey,53percent of Americans with full-time1 jobs said they knew someone who had lost a job in the past year.Of that same group, more than a third feared becoming unemployed2 themselves.Faced with a tight job market, many job seekers are improving their competitive edge by creating personal career portfolios4.More than a résumé,a career portfolio3 gives employers an in-depth look at your goals, accomplishments, and experiences. The following four steps will help you get started building your own topnotch2) portfolio.

1.Identify your goals An effective portfolio should have a single, unifying theme:your professional goals.Your first task, then,is to do a little self-assessment.Then you'll find it easier to develop a cohesive3) and targeted portfolio. If you're still wondering what you'd like to be when you grow up,take a few easy self-assessment courses. You can find such training courses on the Internet as well, such as All About You(http:training.msn.com )。

2.Organize your paperwork With your goals as the theme, each document you include in your portfolio should provide evidence supporting that theme. While you may include certificates, diplomas, awards, reference letters, samples of completed projects, and information on community service and professional memberships,be sure you are showcasing only those documents that align4) well with your stated professional goals.

3.Put it all together Once you've assembled your portfolio, make two versions:an original that you can show during interviews, and a reproduction to leave behind for your interviewers' in-depth review. Both copies should be impeccable5)。If original certificates and awards are worn, have them professionally reproduced. If you are including lengthier6) items such as completed projects, publications,or proposals, make sure they are free of grammatical gaffes7),spelling errors, and formatting8 incosistencies.

4.Consider going digital Creating a printed copy of your career portfolio is essential, but don't overlook the marketing9 power of digital media.Although a digital portfolio isn't necessary for every job search,it may make it easier to reproduce your portfolio,to send it to distant locations, and to update it frequently. You can burn your digital portfolio onto a CD-ROM,save it on a Zip disk to send through e-mail,or design it as a password-protected Web site.Another option is to use the MSN Careers résué posting service to post your portfolio, making it accessible to a large number of potential employers. If you've never created a Web page before, you may go to take a HTML design course in an Internet training school.
