When I was 12, my father took me to The Children’s Museum in Mexico City to see a movie. It was unlike any movie I had seen before. There were bad guys or animals without fur-just colorful balls circling around a ball of fire against an empty black background. I still remember the excitement I felt then.
My interest in science began at 16 when it was viewed as a waste of time. When I told my parents and teachers in high school that I wanted to study math and physics at university, my dreams were met with disapproval. I was told those careers were too hard for women and I should study something more appropriate like communications or marketing.
At last I gave in to the pressure around me. In my first two years at the Iberoamericana University, I studied philosophy. But my love for math and physics didn’t fade. Behind my parents’ back, I applied to American universities because a friend told me that, “In the US, you can study more than one subject at a time,” and one of the subjects I would study there would be physics.
I was accepted to Brandeis with a full scholarship. But I continued with my philosophy major.
One day I saw a notice advertising a course in astronomy. And then I remembered the movie. This was a chance to understand those colorful balls and explore the dark space myself! I enrolled in the course and my life changed forever. Two years later, I graduated with a double major in physics and philosophy. Afterwards, I be-came the first Mexican woman to get a PhD in physics.
I’ve never forgotten the movie that inspired my interest in physics. For that reason, I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of the team creating Secrets of the Universe.

28. Which can be the best title of the text?
A. The secret to physics. B. My favorite film.

In Antarctica, the long dark winter gives way to summer. Ice begins to melt, and the sun stays in the sky all night long. Into this brightly lit world, the large gray head of a seal appears through a crack in the ice. The seal takes several deep breaths. Then she opens her mouth and turns her head from side to side. With her teeth, she scrapes(刮掉)off bits of ice. Seals are mammals, and they need to breathe air. So seals use their teeth to make sure their breathing holes stay open. The seal makes the hole bigger. When she can fit her large body through it, she climbs out onto the ice. She is getting ready to have a baby.
On the ice shelf, the seal gives birth to a pup(幼小的動物). The pup is about three feet long-the size of a two-year-old child. It is cowered with thick fur that protects it from the cold wind. The pup drinks its mother’s milk and grows quickly. Beneath the seal’s skin is a thick layer of fat called blubber. Blubber keeps the seal warm in the frozen world.
When the pup is about two weeks old, it begins to dive with its mother. They slide through the breathing hole into the water below the ice. There the pup learns to swim, diving deeper and deeper each day. In order to stay underwater, it must learn to hold its breath and control its heart rate.
The young seal spends more and more time below the ice, where it learns to hunt for food. The mother shows her pup how to catch fish, squid and octopuses. These are important lessons. When the pup is about two months old, it will have to feed itself.
As it grows, the young seal remains on and under the fast ice. Fast ice is attached the Antarctic coastline. Here the pup stays safe from predators, such as orcas. When the pup becomes an adult, it will swim farther out in search of food. But it will always live on or under the ice.
29. What do you learn about the summer in Antarctica?
A. It is not dark at all at night. B. There in no ice on the sea.

Why do sensible people seem to lose the ability to act sensibly in conflict? What makes some families tear themselves apart in some small quarrels and not speak to each other for years? What drives neighbors to ruin their daily lives with unpleasant conflicts(爭論)?
The answer can be due to self-esteem, which is one of the strongest factors in conflict and produces powerful emotions. We all have a need to think well of ourselves and for others to think well of us. Self-esteem governs many of the decisions we make, as we expend lots of time and effort constantly maintaining and protecting our self-image.
Now evidence shows the effect that attacks on our self-esteem have on the brain. One study showed that any attack on our self-image is interpreted by the brain as physical pain. When we speak of “hurt” feelings, we ac-knowledge that it will affect our self-esteem and is felt as physical pain. The word “sorry” is one of the most difficult to express, despite it being the quickest, cheapest and most effective form of solving a dispute. But our brain seems to tell us that saying sorry will be as painful as putting our hand into a fire.
This ability helps us to see how our brain functions in conflict situations. For example, we now have an explanation of our “fight or flight” instinct(本能), which is governed by the amygdala(扁桃腺), two small structures in the brain that control our instinctive responses.
Today the amygdala can be motivated by any attack on our self-esteem. When the brain senses a threat, it’ll prevent us from engaging in logical or analytical thought, instead creating instant defensive reactions.
That’s why we recoil when faced with fault, whether in business, within the family, or in the supermarket. It is an attack on our self-esteem, and it is painful. It is at these moments that we need to lower our self-esteem, to tell ourselves that our self-esteem is unnecessarily getting in the way, and that it is far more productive to try to sce things from the other’s perspective(看法).
32. What is the function of the questions in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the best way to deal with conflict.
B. To introduce the readers to the topic of the passage.
C.To stress the important of handling conflict correctly.
D. To warn readers not to have a conflict with family members.
33. Why do people find it difficult to apologize to others?
A.They refuse to say sorry our of their self-image.
B.There is a pain in their heart when they say sorry.
C. They are driven by some negative brain activities.
D. They find it helpless to solve the conflict with others.
34. The underlined word “recoil” in the last paragraph means “________”.
A. get away B. stand our C. give up D. draw back
35. What does the author suggest we should do when faced with fault?
A. Build up our self-esteem. B. Pretend to know nothing about it.
C. Say sorry for the fault. D. Ignore the pain it has caused.
