Tomas Albert, 17, has a problem.

Though his skin is naturally pale, he prefers to show off his tan, an attractive brown color. When he is on holiday with his family on the Californian beach, he tends to redden and burn his skin. Using a tanning bed (日光浴床) is effective for those who want to have brown color. But the golden tan desired by many Californians just got a little harder for teens to achieve.

Under the law signed by Governor Jerry Brown on Sunday that is now the nation’s most restrictive, boys and girls under 18 are banned from using tanning beds. The law came into effect in January, 2012. The previous law allowed teens who are at least 14 to use a tanning bed with written permission from their parents.

Texas has banned children under 16 from using tanning beds, and other states have age restrictions. But California has become the first state in the US to completely forbid all teens under 18 from the practice.

State Senator Ted Lieu, the law’s sponsor, said the higher age limit was necessary because the type of radiation used in tanning beds can lead to skin damage, which is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women age 25 to 30.

The warnings don’t alarm Tomas who was shopping with friends on Sunday. “I don’t think it is that bad.” His friend, 16-year-old Elise Filter of Berkeley, said, “I just think it looks a lot healthier to have natural color on my skin.”

“The danger of tanning beds isn’t ignored but the new age limit will hurt business owners,” said the Indoor Tanning Association, an industry group that said up to 10 percent of its members’ customers are under 18.

Several Bay Area tanning clubs said few of their customers are teens. But Svetlana Serbul, owner of Walnut Creek Tanning, said teenage girls made up 10 to 15 percent of her customers.

Serbul said she was already upset about a 10 percent tax on tanning-bed services, a fee President Barack Obama set to raise money for the federal health care system.

  11. Now Tomas Albert’s problem is that ____________.

  A. his skin got burnt on Sunday on the coastal beach

  B. he is laughed at because of his pale skin

  C. his parents forbade him to use tanning beds

  D. he is not allowed to use tanning beds by law.

  12. According to the passage, California ___________.

  A. had no previous ban on the use of tanning beds by teenagers

  B. is the first state to set tanning restrictions for teens

  C. has the highest age limit for tanning beds in the US

  D. has a high death rate from skin cancer

  13. What is Tomas Albert’s attitude towards the danger of tanning beds?

  A. He thinks it not great. B. He takes it seriously.

  C. He is shocked by it. D. He is doubtful about it.

  14. It can be inferred that Svetlana Serbul ____________.

  A. supported Obama ‘s tax policy

  B. is worrying a lot about her business

  C. has no regard for customers’ safety

  D. believes the higher age limit is necessary

  15. The passage is mainly about ____________.

  A. the danger of tanning beds

  B. the popularity of tanning among teenagers

  C. Obama’s tax policy on tanning-bed services

  D. a California’s ban on teenagers’ use of tanning beds

Most readers of Mark Twain (1835-1910) know that the real name of the famous American author was Samuel Clemens, but how many know the origin of his pen name? The answer is a way into the colorful and adventurous early life of Clemens, which included attempts to get his footing in a number of trades before he found his true calling in life. “Mark Twain” was the cry given out on a steamship when the ship entered a river depth of two fathoms. Twain trained as a steamship pilot on the Mississippi river for two years, a time that inspired his vivid and humorous memoir Life on the Mississippi.

The river would become an important theme in his mature work – who could forget the journey of Huck and Jim along it in his most famous book---The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Twain did not come from a typical writer’s background. He had to teach himself, making use of public libraries to gain the knowledge he would put to use in his fiction and journalism.

On the other hand, his life experience gave him wonderful material to draw on and draw readers in. Mark Twain wrote in a style that has been called “local color” because it shows great knowledge of local people, their ways and customs.

This gift is very clear in the two books for which Twain remains celebrated today: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and its follow-up The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which many call “The Great American Novel”.

The most remarkable invention in the book is the voice of Huck himself. Huck didn’t take to schooling. It shows in the way he uses language, in a spoken style. Only a master such as Twain could have created such a convincing imitation of the way a young southern boy would have talked in the years leading up to the American Civil War.

  16. Which word can best replace the underlined word footing in the first paragraph?

  A. Fortune. B. Fame. C. Passion. D. position.

  17. What does the underlined phrase “this gift” in paragraph 5 refer to?

  A. His talent for self-teaching.

  B. His use of writing to represent local people and culture.

  C. His impressive physical appearance.

  D. His experience as a sailor.

  18. What is the most outstanding part of Huckleberry Finn, according to the article?

  A. The unique way that Huck talks.

  B. The vivid descriptions.

  C. The deep social meaning.

  D. The exciting adventures.

  19. We can infer from the article that Mark Twain ______.

  A. had a strong educational background

  B. benefited a lot from the influence of his family

  C. succeeded mostly thanks to his hard work

  D. didn’t think that local people were worth writing about

  20. What is the article mainly about?

  A. Why Mark Twain is the best writer in the history of American literature.

  B. How Mark Twain’s life experiences influenced his writing.

  C. The difficulties Mark Twain overcame in his writing career.

  D. Mark Twain’s interest in describing local life.

  C

Today I enjoyed my first Father’s Day as a father. My wife worked hard to make the day special and it started when she made me a nice breakfast. Then we spent the morning at church and then went out for a nice lunch at a place where I’d been longing to go for a while. The afternoon was spent at the pool eating ice cream and cookie cake.

I’ve become a dad, so what does Father’s Day mean to me now? Well, I guess the day is really about appreciating my dad. I’d say the last 10 months saw all the hard work my parents did for my son. They have to work even harder now as my son Sawyer is moving around and getting into everything.

I’ve always appreciated the hard work my dad did, though I seldom talked about it. I come from many generations of blue-collar workers and three generations of workers of Ford Motor Company. My dad spent more than thirty years working at Ford and is still working for a city water company. I remember he would sometimes work seven days a week and sometimes until midnight. He seems to enjoy working with his hands and is good at cars and fixing things. I am not nearly as good at cars as my dad. I spent one night working a midnight shift at an M&M factory and decided never to do it again.

Growing up I didn’t have to worry about whether I’d have food to eat and now I still call my dad whenever my car makes a funny sound. Some of my sweetest memories are wrestling with my dad, and driving with him in his truck to Grandpa’ with the windows down.

Thanks for working hard all those years and taking care of us, Dad.

  21. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?

  A. Why the author likes celebrating Father’s Day.

  B. What the author’s wife wanted him to do on Father’s Day.

  C. How the author should have celebrated Father’s Day.

  D. How the author spent his first Father’s Day as a father.

  22. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that __________.

  A. the author is too busy to look after his son

  B. the author’s parents help look after his little son

  C. the author doesn’t know what Father’s Day really means

  D. the author doesn’t think looking after his son is a hard job.

  23. In Paragraph 3, the author mainly wants to tell us that _________.

  A. he had a very difficult childhood

  B. his dad is really good at repairing cars

  C. his dad really deserves his appreciation

  D. his dad should have changed his job.

  24. What does the underline word “it” in Paragraph3 refer to?

  A. working at night B. calling his father

  C. fixing cars D. working in an M&M factory

  25. When the author was young, he ________.

  A. was interested in fixing cars B. felt the happiest at his grandpa’s

  C. sometimes suffered from hunger D. had some great time with his father
