In the Middle Ages in Europe, theater was an important part of civic, economic and religious life. During this period after the fall of Roman civilization, many cities were destroyed. Southern and Western Europe, famous for its agriculture, became increasingly more agricultural. After several hundred years, many towns appeared again. The Roman Catholic Church took over religion, education and politics. What remained of theater was mostly on the Greek and Roman performing arts.

Theater was reborn as liturgical(禮拜式的)dramas. It was written in Latin and dealing with biblical(圣經(jīng))stories which would be performed by church members. Then there came local dramas spoken in common language not Latin. They were more wonderful one-act dramas taking place in town squares or other parts of the city. There were three types of local dramas. Mystery or cycle plays were short dramas based on biblical stories organized into historical cycles. Miracle plays dealt with the lives of the great. Morality(道德的)plays taught a lesson through characters standing for good or bad qualities. Secular plays in this period existed, but religious drama in the Middle Ages is mostly remembered today. As the Middle Ages ended, the number of religious theatres became small as the church weakened and more secular qualities won over religious theaters.

  25. According to the passage, what does "secular plays"mean here?

  A. Plays that deal with the lives of the great. B. Plays that taught a lesson.

  C. Plays based on biblical stories.

  D. Plays that are not connected with the church.

  26. Why did religious theatres become less important as the Middle Ages came to an end?

  A. People were not interested in them any longer.

  B. The church was not as important as what it had been.

  C. People liked new plays.

  D. The stories of religious theatres were outdated.

  27. According to the passage, why did religious theatres take over in the Middle Ages?

  A. People preferred religious theatres to other ones.

  B. There were no other types of theatres.

  C. The church played an important part in people’s life.

  D. The quality of religious theatres was better than that of other theatres.

  28. What would be the best title for the passage?

  A. European dramas B. Religious dramas

  C. Religious theatres in the Middle Ages D. Secular dramas in the Middle Ages

  [C]

Sleeping in is one of the best parts of the weekend. After a long, exhausting work week, sometimes all you want to do is sleep. On Friday night, you slide under the covers, smiling in anticipation. Now you can finally catch up on your sleep.

Except you can’t. When you open your eyes Saturday morning, it’s still early. If this were a weekday, you’d be up before your alarm. So what’s the deal?

We hate to break it to you, but you’ve pretty much done this t o yourself. Your bod y is very good at recognizing patterns and adjusting accordingly. If you’ve got a 9-to-5 job, you’re getting up early five days a week. This effectively sets your body clock to wake you at a certain time each day. You can shut off your alarm clock, but your body clock will just keep ticking.

There’s another reason that you probably don’t want to think about: You’re just not as young as you used to be. We need less sleep as we get older. Babies need between 16 and 20 hours. Teenagers should (but often don’t) get nine hours a night. Younger and middle-aged adults need eight. In general, the older you get, the harder it is to snooze the day away.

Even if you do manage to sleep in, you may never fully catch up on your sleep. If your body needs eight hours every night and you only get six or seven from Monday to Friday, you’d have to sleep an extra five to ten hours on Saturday to make it up. And experts say even that may not be enough.

The bottom line: Sleep when you can, and enjoy those extra weekend morning hours. Who doesn’t want a longer weekend?

  29. What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 1?

  A. You know that you will oversleep on Saturday morning.

  B. You needn’t get up early on Saturday morning, so you will have a better sleep.

  C. Since you don’t work on Saturday, you needn’t go to sleep as usual.

  D. You know that even though you needn’t get up early on Saturday morning, you will wake as usual.

  30. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

  A. If you have a 9-to-5 job, you are likely to develop a flexible body clock.

  B. Once you have set your body clock, it is not easy to change it.

  C. The author will not break the pattern, but you will do it yourself.

  D. If you adjust your body clock accordingly, you are healthy.

  31. Which of the following is the reason why you can’t sleep in on weekends?

  A. You are not willing to admit that you are old.

  B. You need to relax on the weekend.

  C. Your body clock still works on weekends.

  D. You can never get enough sleep.

  32. Which is the best title of the passage?

  A. Why can't I sleep in on weekends anymore?

  B. Why can’t I catch up on my sleep?

  C. How to turn off my body clock on Saturdays?

  D. How to get more sleep on Saturday mornings?

  [D]

Every Wednesday, I go to Cantata Adult Life Services,a local retirement community in Brookfield, Illinois, US, with my classmates to do community service.

After my very first visit to Cantata,my life changed forever. That may sound a bit dramatic, but volunteering with the elderly has changed my views on life.

Our visits last about an hour, and we bring 25¬30 students every time. We play board games and cards with the residents while we're there.

You can watch all the movies and TV shows you want about “life back then”, but nothing compares to talking to the people who were actually there. Just hearing their stories has touched me in a way I never thought possible.

Whether it was talking to 98¬year¬old “Hurricane Hilda” about her glory days as a roller skater or chatting with Lou about the times she danced with a famous actor, I was completely attracted by every single memory the residents wanted to share with me.

Even the residents who don't have amazing memories make the experience satisfying. I remember visiting Mrs. Robinson. She couldn't recall much about her past, but she told me she'd never forget how kind I was just to listen to her “rambling(漫談)”. It made me realize that it's the little things that make life worth living. That's something I won't forget anytime soon.

If there's one thing I've realized in my three years of visiting Cantata, it's that presence—just being there—means more than anything to many of the residents. And despite how busy our lives are, there's always time to make someone's day.

For me, it feels great to be a source of happiness, a smile on a bad day or a listening ear for old memories. And at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

It's easy to feel like you don't have anything in common with the elderly—especially when you're a teenager. But that's not true at all.

I hate to be overly clichéd(陳詞濫調(diào)的) here, but age really is just a number. As young adults, it's important for us to realize this sooner rather than later. We can learn a lot from the elderly, and they can often benefit from teenagers too.

33.What do the volunteers do according to the passage?

A.They share everything with the residents.

B.They play board games and cards with the residents.

C.They watch the residents play games.

D.They buy gifts for the residents.

34.According to the writer, what is the most important thing that volunteers can do for the elderly?

  A.Playing with them.

  B.Benefiting from them.

  C.Helping them.

  D.Being there with them.

35.What does the writer want to tell us by writing this passage?

A.We don't have anything in common with the elderly.

  B.Age is just a number.

C.It is important t o help the elderly.

D.Young adults and the elderly can benefit from each other.

  第二節(jié)書面表達(dá)(滿分25分)

  One possible version 1:

I prefer my English classes to be taught in English only. As we all know, a good learning environment is vital if we w ant to study English well. Classes taught in English provide students with such an environment. When English is the only language used in the classroom, students will have more opportunities to practice listening and speaking. Therefore, they will be able to learn more quickly.

However, there are also some problems with this teaching method. As we haven’t mastered enough English words, sometimes we may find it difficult to follow the teacher. Slow learners may even lose interest in English.

Practice makes perfect. To learn English well requires a lot of practice. Therefore, I like my English classes to be taught completely in English.

  One possible version 2:

I prefer my English classes to be taught in both Chinese and English. In my opinion, learning English is a step-by-step process. As middle school students, we only have a small vocabulary. If the teacher can use some Chinese in an English class, we will understand the lesson better.

Of course, an English class taught in two languages has its shortcoming. Such a class cannot create a good atmosphere for English learning. Some students may speak Chinese all the time and cannot learn English well.

If you want to learn a lesson well, you have to understand it first. To help students understand the lesson better, the teacher should use Chinese from time to time. Therefore, I like my teacher to use both English and Chinese in teaching.
