Do you ever get to the bottom of the page and realize you’ve got too little time or too little interest to spend another minute on the book? It happens to everybody sometimes. Luckily, there are many things you can do to make the reading a lot easier and faster. For example, if you read a paragraph, consider skimming over the whole story to get the main idea and the main characters, so you’ll know what to pay attention to as you read more closely. Reading about the book on the Internet can be a good way to get a good conclusion of the reading to help you get through it more easily. Just don’t forget to go back and read through more closely.
While reading, don’t forget to look up any words or ideas you aren’t sure about. You can use context (上下文) clues to help you understand things you think difficult, but it’s always a good idea to take a minute to learn any reference (參考書). It’ll make the reading much easier.
More importantly, be sure to learn to take notes while you are reading. You can write questions in the margin (頁邊空白), and underline things which you think are interesting and important ideas. If you’re reading something difficult and find yourself often wanting to go back to get something you missed, then, at the end of each page, or even at the end of each paragraph, write something about what happened on that page. If you find something that needs answering, always write it down. This might give you a good question to ask later in class, or give you something to think more about as you continue reading. What’s more, when you finish reading, start writing down what seems important, what you think the purpose of the writing is, and how it makes you feel as a reader.
After you finish reading, get together with your friends or classmates and discuss the reading. Try to know how your classmates understand the reading and compare it with your own. Try not to talk about whether or not it is “boring”, but pay attention to how well your classmates explain what you might have found difficult. Think of open questions to explore the reading, and don’t ask questions that can be answered with a “yes” or a “no”. Learning to ask “how” is a helpful way of coming up with big discussion questions.

November 21 is World Hello Day. At school, we learned that “How do you do?” and “How are you?” are standard ways to say hello when meeting others. But do you know how to reply to them? Nowadays, do native speakers seldom use them today?
As we learned, “How do you do?” is for greeting someone we meet for the f 66 time. And it can be answered with the same “How do you do?”. “How are you?” is often used to greet someone we k 67 well. It usually follows with an answer of “I’m good, and you?” or “I’m fine, and you?”.
But English is a casual (隨意的) language. The formal “How do you do?” is rarely said by native speakers. It is considered old-fashioned. Yet they greet each other in m 68 other ways.
You may hear a conversation b 69 British people: “You all right?” “Yeah, you?” “I’m good. Any plans for the weekend?” or “How’s it going?” “Yea, fine, and you?”. These ways of greeting are p 70 for young people to say hello to friends.
Americans like saying, “What’s up?” or “What’s good?” to friends. Don’t be confused (混淆的). It doesn’t m 71 “What’s wrong?”. It is just one way of saying hello. And people usually give answers like “Not much” or “Nothing”. “Hey, man” is also popular. But it is only used among men. What do w 72 say? You guessed it. They often say “Hey, girl.”
If you meet an Australian, you may h 73 “G’day, mate”. It means “Good day”. You can reply with the same “G’day”.
However, there is no rule to say hello to each other. If you can’t r 74 all of the above, just say “How are you?”. This is the most c 75 and standard way for people of all ages. You can reply with “pretty good”, “same as usual” or “I’m hanging in there.”

Are e-books better than traditional paper books? E-books are very popular these days, but many readers prefer paper books.
Some people think that e-books are great. They can store thousands of books on an e-reader. They don’t need to go to a bookshop because they can buy and receive books online immediately.
On the other hand, paper books are still very popular. Some people prefer to hold a “real” book and like to touch paper pages although real paper books take up much space at home.
In short, I think that e-books are a really useful invention. Many people use them but they won’t replace paper books in the future.
