埃迪原本是高山滑雪選手，但這個(gè)項(xiàng)目競(jìng)爭(zhēng)激烈，為了實(shí)現(xiàn)奧運(yùn)夢(mèng)他改練跳臺(tái)滑雪，遠(yuǎn)渡重洋來(lái)到了紐約州開(kāi)始用借來(lái)的裝備練習(xí)跳臺(tái)滑雪，1987年他代表英國(guó)參加世界錦標(biāo)賽，排名第55位，因此獲得了一張奧運(yùn)入場(chǎng)券。當(dāng)時(shí)他體重181磅，是那屆冬奧會(huì)上該項(xiàng)目體重最重的選手，比第二名重了整整20磅。而且他還是遠(yuǎn)視眼，必須一直戴眼鏡，外面再罩護(hù)目鏡，比賽的時(shí)候，眼鏡上的霧氣經(jīng)常讓他幾乎看不見(jiàn)東西。
