“You have no flying skills at all!” he said to the swans. “All you can do is to move your wings. Can you turn over in the air? No, I don’t think you can do it! Let’s have a flying competition. I’ll show you what real flying is!”

One of th e swans, a strong young male, took up the challenge. The crow flew up and began to show his skills. He flew in circles, performed other flying tricks, and then came down and looked proudly at the swan.

Now it was the swan’s turn. He flew up, and began flying over the sea. The crow flew after him, making all kinds of comments (評(píng)價(jià)) about his flying. They flew on and on till they couldn’t see the land and there was nothing but water on all sides. The crow was making fewer and fewer comments. He was now so tired that he found it hard to stay in the air, and had to struggle(掙扎) to keep himself from falling into the water.

The swan pretended (假裝) not to notice, and said, “Why do you keep touching the water, brother? Is that another trick? “

Stonehenge, a rock circle, is not only one of Britain’s most famous places but also one of its greatest mysteries(謎). Every year it receives more than 750,000 visitors. People like to go to this place especially in June as they want to see the sun rising on the longest day of the year.

For many years, historians(歷史學(xué)家) believed Stonehenge was a temple where ancient leaders tried to communicate with the gods. However, historian Paul Stoker thinks this can’t be true because Stonehenge was built so many centuries ago. “The leaders arrived in England much later,” he points out.

Another popular idea is that Stonehenge might be a kind of calendar. The large stones were put together in a certain way. On midsummer’s morning, the sun shines directly into the center of the stones. Other people believe the stones have a medical purpose. They think the stones can prevent illness and keep people healthy. “As you walk there, you can feel the energy from your feet move up your body,” said one visitor. No one is sure what Stonehenge was used for, but most agree that the position of the stones must be for a special purpose. Some think it might be a burial(埋葬) place or a place to remember ancestors(祖先). Others think it was built to celebrate a victory over an enemy.

Stonehenge was built slowly over a long period of time. Most historians believe it must be almost 5,000 years old. One of the greatest mysteries is how it was built because the stones are so big and heavy. In 2001, a group of English volunteers tried to build another Stonehenge, but they couldn’t. “We don’t really know who built Stonehenge,” says Paul Stoker. “And perhaps we might never know, but we do know they must have been hard-working — and great planners!”

  51. What do most people think was Stonehenge built for?

  A. Ancient leaders built it a temple to communicate with the gods.

  B. It might be a kind of calendar to tell people the summertime.

  C. It can prevent illness and make people feel energetic.

  D. It must be for a special purpose because of the position of the stones.

  52. What aren’t people interested in about Stonehenge?

  A. Where it was built. B. Who built it. C. When it was built. D. Why it was built.

  53. What does Paul Stoker mean by “we do know they must have been hard-working — and

  great planners”?

  A. He has known who built Stonehenge. B. He thinks Stonehenge is really a great mystery.

  C. He believes he will find out who built Stonehenge.

  D. He encourages volunteers to build another Stonehenge.

  (D)

One day, I took an underground to work, I saw something that made me very sad. On the tube( underground in London), a mother kept looking at her phone screen and playing a game with her daughter sitting beside her. The little girl, about 5 years old, was talking to her mother about her day, repeating the next stop's name cheerfully, praising her mother's long nails--trying to catch her mother's attention. Her mother just nodded and answered "Mm, hm" with her eyes glued to the screen, busy passing the levels of the game. I watched the girl give a final try to at least get her mum to look at her, but it was no use. Then the little girl turned silent. It was a shame the mother didn't notice that.

It broke my heart and got me wondering--what kind of game would make the mother forget she has the most beautiful thing in the world, the human she created, the person she loves with all her heart? What it meant when she couldn't look into her daughter's eyes and even stop to listen to the girl?

Some parents are almost like the teenagers, always on their phones with mindless games or going through Facebook. Perhaps parents have many things to deal with, but sometimes they are everything to their kids.

This is not a isolated example. I've seen too many such examples. I might not be a parent myself, and probably still have a long way before becoming one, but I know what I saw isn't right.

The scene used to be seen among teenagers very often when parents complained(抱怨) how their children were crazy about their mobile phones. Look how the situation has changed! The parents have become "technology slaves"(奴隸), that is to say, they can't control themselves while using mobile phones. Now some middle-aged parents hold the best iPhones or Samsung phones, which are probably the only two brands they know. They are playing the simple games with so expensive mobile phones. I'm uncertain whether to laugh or to cry. But my hope is that this storm passes.

54 Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

  A. The girl failed to catch her mother's attention.

  B. The mother felt sorry after her daughter turned silent.

  C. The writer has much experience about being a parent.

  D. Middle-aged parents know many brands of mobile phones.

  55. The underlined word "isolated" in Paragraph 4 means____________ .

  A. spreading fast B. happening once C. increasing quickly D. appearing suddenly

  56. In the passage, the writer mainly wants to express_____________ .

  A. the worries that children are crazy about mobile phones

  B. the happiness that parents are now able to use modern technology

  C. the sadness that the best smart phones cost parents too much money

  D. the hope that parents use new technology like smart phones properly

  57. What's the best title of the passage?

  A. Middle-aged parents B. A scene on the tube

  C. Technology slaves D. Mindless phone games

Have you ever asked your relatives or friends if there is Wi-Fi in their houses? Have you ever searched for Wi-Fi when you are at restaurants or hotels? The answers will probably be "Yes". Most of us want Wi-Fi everywhere as if we can't live without it. But we can only use free Wi-Fi in some public places. We still have to spend some money accessing(連接)the Internet at most time. Here comes a piece of good news.

A rich, powerful organization in the USA called the Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) has decided to change the age of online computing (計(jì)算) completely by giving free Wi-Fi to every person on Earth. They will send up hundreds of satellites into low Earth orbit(軌道)in 2015.

This is because they have made a survey and found that only 60% of the world's population have been able to get information on the Internet. And this is also because many countries are unable to offer people the necessary infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施)to access the web.

Every minute, someone is setting up an Internet company somewhere, in the world. Each one is searching for the one great idea that could make his web company click in a big way. And they are trying all kinds of tricks to attract people towards their websites. While some websites offer sounds, cartoons and amazing photos on screen to make their sites almost a movie-like experience for the viewers, others provide free downloads and competitions.

A company in California, US, has decided to offer online smells to people who visit its website. That is, if a pizza image comes on screen, your nose will catch the smell of bread and cheese! All you need to do is to connect a device(設(shè)備) called “iSmell” with your computer. This smart little device includes some chemicals that can create different kinds of smells.

The company has invented software that changes the chemical composition(成分) of different smells into digital signals(數(shù)字信號(hào)). An onscreen image, which is programmed with the proper digital signal, will start the “iSmell” device. The device will use the software to change the digital signal again and let go of the correct smell. This device reads the digital smell code(代碼) from the website and creates the proper smell from its store of chemicals. This smell is then made to blow softly in the direction of the user with the support of a small fan.

In order to let go of the correct smell, the company has created a “Scent Registry”, which includes a digital index(數(shù)字索引) of thousands of smells. The company plans to allow website developers to make the proper smells in digital code to their games and images. The company is also hoping that Hollywood filmmakers will use the smell technology in their movies.

Starting a book club is easy- all you need is to love reading. Here’s how to get yours off to a flying start.

When you set up your book club, the first thing is to get members for your club. They could be friends, family, or those you know through various activities, but they should all love to read. A small group of seven to ten people is usually an ideal size for a book club. Too many make discussions difficult.

Once you have a group, agree on how often you want to meet- usually clubs meet monthly. Pick a date and stick with it. That way, members can easily plan for it. Send out emails a week before the meeting to give people a written reminder. Set meeting time length.

An hour is a good start. Two hours usually does the trick.

Then, you need a good place. Libraries, parks and restaurants- all make good meeting places. For many clubs, homes are the best place as you don’t have to get dressed up, and noisy public places can make talking hard. If members bring a plate of food or a bottle, it can help start conversation.

Please don’t forget the most important thing- the book! Think about the books your club will enjoy. Fiction? Your club can choose books in different ways. You can take turns to recommend books. Let everyone vote upon what book to read. Anyway, make sure to keep it light and fun.

After all this has been decided, your book club is ready. Now, it is time to hold the first meeting. Enjoy your reading.

How to start a book club

Getting members ●You can include those who share your love for reading.

●___1___ matters. Seven to ten people are enough for discussion.

A woman whose sports car was stolen with her dog in it put up notices all over the area. It was clear that getting back her pet was more important than her car.

“Whoever did this can keep my car. Please let Tom come home,” the notice said.

It is not known whether the thief showed any pity, but almost 30 hours after the 1 p.m. theft Friday, Julie and Tom, a 10-year-old black retriever (獵犬), were reunited (重聚). “He’s hungry. He’s dirty, but he’s very happy to be home,” Julie said.

The car was found in an area full of off-the-road cars and dirt bikes. However, the police couldn’t control Tom, and they had to call Julie to come and get him.

Julie said the thief cared for Tom a little by providing him with some dry dog food. She believed Tom ended up drinking some muddy water in the area.

She said they have been together for nearly 8 years after she took him back from a society shelter in Dallas, Texas.

Before Tom was found, Julie and several friends put up notices all over the city. They also contacted animal shelters, throughout southern New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The notice stated there was a reward (報(bào)酬), and also that the dog needed medical treatment. Any caller could remain anonymous. Julie had parked the car outside a hardware store with the keys inside and gone in to buy a carpet cleaner.

Rats are not many people’s favourite animals. But in most places, people have to learn to live with them.

Not in New Zealand, though. To save native (本國(guó)的) birds, the country plans to get rid of rats, possums (負(fù)鼠) and stoats (白鼬) by 2050, reported Time for Kids.

In New Zealand, rats are an invasive (入侵的) species. They arrive on boats, along with the island’s first human settlers, in the 13th century. Scientists believe that as time passed by, the rats ate and killed off several bird species on the island.

Humans also brought other animals like stoats and possums. In the beginning, stoats were hoped to eat another kind of invasive animal: rabbits. However, the stoats fed on native species instead.

Likewise, possums were introduced because people wanted their fur. But their population quickly grew out of control. Possums feed on the eggs and young of native birds.

Most of New Zealand’s native species are birds. Many, like the national bird, the kiwi (幾維鳥(niǎo)), can’t fly. Because they spent so long without a natural enemy, the birds lost the need to fly. When mammals (哺乳動(dòng)物) like rats arrived, being not able to fly became a big problem for the birds.

The government of New Zealand suggests several ways to get rid of the mammals. Traps (捕鼠夾) and bait (誘餌) stations are the main types.

Genetic methods are also used. For example, scientists are trying to use gene technology to cause sterility (不育) in rats to control their population, reported Nature Research online.

  九、書(shū)面表達(dá):

  Dear classmates,

It’s a fact that we middle school students have some problems. The most important thing is to deal with them properly.

Some of us find it hard to keep a balance between study and hobbies because too much homework takes us too long a time. I think it’s better to plan our day carefully and choose our hobby according to the time we have.

Besides, some seem to be too crazy about computer games to finish their homework on time. As a result, they often get low marks. But as the proverb says, “No pain, no gain” , we’d better pay more attention to our schoolwork in order to have a brighter future.

Sadly, a few students hardly have time to communicate with their parents. Anyway, parents are those who care about us most. Talking to them and sharing our thoughts with them are of help to our growth. / (What’s worse, some other students always keep their worries to themselves. It’s a healthy and helpful way to ask for help when necessary.)

In a word, every teenager should pay close attention to our problems and take active action. Only in this way can we make progress in both our lives and study.
