rare 的副詞形式為rarely,意為“不常;很少;難得”。它的名詞形式為rarity ,意為“稀罕;罕見”。rarely用于句首時,和seldom, never等一樣,后面的句子要用倒裝句式。例如:
Rarely have I seen such a beautiful sunset.我很少見到這樣美麗的日落。

此句是一個it 用作形式主語的句子,動詞不定式to have survived for a long time是真正的主語。該句型結構是:It + be + adj. + 動詞不定式。
例如:
It is necessary to learn English well.有必要學好英語。
It is impossible to finish such hard work in such a short time.在這么短的時間內完成這么難的工作是不可能的。
其具體形式還有兩種:
(1)It + be + adj. + for sb.+ 動詞不定式
這類句型常用形容詞easy, difficult, hard, important, possible,wise等作表語,有時候為了強調不定式動作的執(zhí)行者,常在不定式前加for sb.。

It?s necessary for the young to master two foreign language.年輕人有必要掌握兩門外語。
It is unwise to give the children whatever they want.孩子想要什么就給什么是不明智的。
(2)It + be + adj. + of sb. + 動詞不定式,這類形容詞常是表示心理品質,性格特征的形容詞,如:kind, nice, stupid, clever, foolish, polite, impolite, silly, selfish, considerate等。某人和這些形容詞可以構成主系表結構。
例如:
It?s very kind of you to help me with the work. =You are kind to help me.你幫助我工作真是太好了。
It seemed selfish of him not to share his dictionary with others. =He seemed selfish not to share his dictionary with others.他不給別人用字典似乎是自私的。

amaze
作動詞,意為“ 使驚奇”,常用于 be amazed at/by (對……大為驚奇)和to one?s amazement (使某人大為驚奇的是)的結構。amazed 作形容詞,意為“ 感到驚奇的”; amazing 作形容詞,意為“令人吃驚的”; an amazing achievement/discovery驚人的成就/發(fā)現(xiàn)amazement作名詞,意為“驚奇”; amazingly作副詞,意為“令人驚奇的是”。
例如:
I was amazed at his conduct.我對他的行為感到驚訝。
He stood in amazement at the sight.他看到那種景象, 驚愕得呆呆地站在那里。
難點深究
注意amaze, astonish, surprise的區(qū)別:都含有“使……驚異” 的意思,而且它們都是一般以事物或他人作主語,以本人作賓語; 以本人作主語時用被動形式。
amaze強調“使驚異,困惑”,其間還有“驚嘆,佩服”的意思,是意義很強的詞;
astonish表示“使人大吃一驚”,“幾乎無法使人相信”,但沒有“驚嘆”的意思;
surprise語氣較上述兩詞弱,只表示“出乎意外地驚異”。
例如:
We were amazed at the ingenuity with which they solved their difficulties.他們在解決困難中所表現(xiàn)的智慧使我們驚嘆。
I was astonished at his rudeness.他的粗野使我大吃一驚。
We were surprised at finding the house empty.我們驚訝地發(fā)現(xiàn)房子是空的。

select
作及物動詞,意為“選擇, 挑選”。
例如:

They were selected from many applicants.他們是從許多報名者當中選出來的。
難點深究
注意choose, select,pick和prefer的區(qū)別。都含“挑選”、“ 選擇”的意思。
choose 系常用詞, 指“一般的選擇”, 側重“憑個人意志或判斷進行選擇”;
select 強調“在廣泛的范圍內精選、淘汰”, 側重“以客觀為標準進行選擇”;
pick 強調“從個人角度在眾多中進行挑選”, 有時含有“任意選擇”的意思;prefer指“偏愛”、“更喜歡”, 有時“只表示自己的看法, 不一定加以選擇”。
例如:
Leave it to you to choose between the two methods.任你在這兩種方法中作出抉擇。
They were selecting maize seeds.他們在選玉米種。
Students have to pick three courses from a list of 15.學生們必須從15門課中選修3門。
I prefer tea to coffee.比起咖啡來我更喜歡茶。
