The Bear and the Two Travelers
熊與兩個(gè)旅者
Two men were traveling together, when a bear suddenly met them on their path.
兩個(gè)平常非常要好的朋友一起走在旅行的途中，突然遇到一頭大熊 。
One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and concealed himself in the branches.

The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over, he held his breath, and feigned theappearance of death as much as he could.
而另一個(gè)眼見(jiàn)逃生無(wú)望，便靈機(jī)一動(dòng)馬上躺倒在地上，緊緊地屏住呼吸，假裝死了，熊走到他跟前，用鼻子在他臉上嗅了嗅，。
The Bear soon left him, for it is said he will not touch a dead body.
不一會(huì)兒熊就轉(zhuǎn)身走了。據(jù)說(shuō)，熊從來(lái)不吃死人。
When he was quite gone, the other traveler descended from the tree, and jocularly inquired of his friend what it was the Bear had whispered in his ear.
躲在樹上的人下來(lái)后，問(wèn)熊在他耳邊說(shuō)了些什么。
"He gave me this advice," his companion replied. "Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger."

狐貍與山羊
By an unlucky chance a Fox fell into a deep well from which he could not get out.
一只不走運(yùn)的狐貍，失足掉到了井里。井很深，他無(wú)法跳出來(lái)。
A Goat passed by shortly afterwards, and asked the Fox what he was doing down there.
一只山羊經(jīng)過(guò)這里，便問(wèn)狐貍在井下做什么。
"Oh, have you not heard?"said the Fox, "there is going to be a great drought, so I jumped down here in order to be sure to have water by me. Why don't you come down too?"
狐貍說(shuō)：“哦，你沒(méi)有聽(tīng)說(shuō)嗎?這里將要大旱，因此我跳進(jìn)來(lái)確保我自己有水喝，為什么你不下來(lái)一起呢?”
The Goat thought well of this advice, and jumped down into the well.
山羊相信了狐貍的話，就真的跳進(jìn)井里。
But the Fox immediately jumped on her back, and by putting his foot on her long horns managed to jump up to the edge of the well.
狐貍立即跳上山羊的背，又一跳，跳上了井沿。
"Good-bye, friend," said the Fox, "remember next time, never trust the advice of a man in difficulties."

吝嗇鬼
A miser sold all that he had and bought a lump of gold, which he buried in a hole in the ground by the side of an old wall and went to look at daily.
一個(gè)吝嗇鬼把自己所有的東西都賣掉了，換來(lái)一大塊金子 .他把金子埋在一堵舊墻邊上一個(gè)洞里面，然后，天天都過(guò)去看一看那塊金子。
One of his workmen observed his frequent visits to the spot and decided to watch his movements. He soon discovered the secret of the hidden treasure, and digging down, came to the lump of gold, and stole it.
后來(lái)，吝嗇鬼的一個(gè)工人發(fā)現(xiàn)他老是跑到一個(gè)-地方，于是留心觀察，很快就發(fā)現(xiàn)了地下藏寶的秘密，于是，挖開(kāi)了那個(gè)洞，把金子偷走了。
The Miser, on his next visit, found the hole empty and began to tear his hair and to make loud lamentations.
當(dāng)吝嗇鬼再一次去看他的金子的時(shí)候，他發(fā)現(xiàn)金子沒(méi)了 .吝嗇鬼傷心得捶胸頓足 。
A neighbor, seeing him overcome with grief and learning the cause, said, "Pray do not grieve so; but go and take a stone, and place it in the hole, and fancy that the gold is still lying there. It will do you quite the same service; for when the gold was there, you had it not, as you did not make the slightest use of it."
一個(gè)鄰居看到吝嗇鬼傷心得快不行了，在了解了事情的原由后對(duì)吝嗇鬼說(shuō)，“求你別那樣傷心了，去找塊石頭放到那洞里面吧，就把石頭當(dāng)成你的金子吧，這能有什么區(qū)別呢，反正金子躺在那里，對(duì)你一點(diǎn)用都沒(méi)有，跟一塊石頭一樣” 。
